Neuroendocrine tumor 

Neuroendocrine tumor is a type of tumor that starts in the cells of neuroendocrine system, these specialized cells produces hormones. These tumors can occur anywhere in the body, common sited are duodenum which is upper part of small intestine, lower part of large intestine also known as rectm, appendix, pancreas and lungs. Neuroendocrine tumor of GI tract are also known as carcinoids.

Symptoms of NET

Neuroendocrine tumor may be silent and picked up by chance during endoscopy or USG or CT scan. Other symptoms are :

  • Diarrhoea
  • Weight loss
  • Pain abdomen
  • Fatigue or unusual tiredness
  • Loss of appetite
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Changes in bowel or bladder habits
  • Changes in the blood sugar levels
  • Skin rash
  • Anxiety

Causes of Neuroendocrine tumors

Diagnosis of Neuroendocrine tumors

NET’s are ususally detected by

  • Endoscopy can detect tumor in stomach, small and large intestine 
  • DOTANOC test is special test for these tumors 
  •  Imaging tests like CT scan , MRI’s , PET –CT , Ultrasound
  • Blood & Urine test
  • Biopsys

Treatment of Neuroendocrine tumors

  • Small tumors can be removed with the help of endoscopy
  • Surgery: surgical removal of tumors
  • Medication
  • Chemotherapy
  • Radiotherapy
